Job Summary:

The Meadows Museum at SMU, is a Division of Meadows School of the Arts.  The Director of Education will supervise, direct, and support the Museum’s education staff, docents, interns, and volunteers; manage the museum fellows; and ensure implementation of the Meadows Museum’s mission.  Serves as Education coordinator and Education liaison to the Meadows Museum Advisory Council.

Essential Functions:

Create and implement innovative, insightful and inclusive education programs at the Museum for all audiences: symposia, lectures, gallery talks, community days, performances, academic programs, members' reading groups, and programs for individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Build strong collaborative relationships between the Meadows Museum and university faculty, staff, students to develop innovative and impactful educational initiatives at the Museum. 

Build strong collaborative relationships between the Meadows Museum and local, national and international communities (other museums, universities, cultural and community groups) to advocate for and develop innovative and impactful educational initiatives at the Museum that serve the needs and interests of our broad, diverse audiences.

Perform and report on new Museum Education research focusing on the development and implementation of innovative strategies for art museum education and interpretation.

Manage Meadows Museum's education department administration, including all tasks relating to budgets, paid Prado/Meadows/Kress and Prado/Meadows/Mellon fellowships.

Education and Experience:

Master’s degree is required; advanced degree in Art Museum Education is preferred.

Five years of relevant museum experience in education departments is required.

Experience developing and managing strategic plans and budgets is required.

Experience working with constituents in higher education is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively interact with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.   Must be able to present information to a wide variety of audiences.

Candidate should have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships with internal teams as well as external local, national and international communities.

Must have excellent management skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. 

Must possess strong administrative, organizational and planning ability.  Strong project management skills are essential.

Candidate must demonstrate excellent problem solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems as well as to devise solutions using creativity, innovation and resourcefulness.

Must be attentive to detail and accuracy, with the ability to develop and manage strategic plans and budgets, monitor expenditures against budget, and prepare necessary documentation for review.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

This position requires regular work on Thursday evenings and some weekends in order to manage public programs.

This position requires occasional travel in order to attend/present at conferences.

Physical/Environmental Demands:

This position must be able to reach above shoulders, carry/lift 25 lbs., and sit for long periods of time, handle objects (dexterity), stand, and walk for long distances.
