The Yale University Art Gallery (the Gallery) is the oldest U.S. college art museum, housing a major collection from all parts of the world. The Gallery’s encyclopedic collections number over 200,000 objects ranging in date from ancient times to the present day. The permanent collection includes: African Art; American Decorative Arts; American Paintings and Sculpture; Ancient Art; Art of the Ancient Americas; Asian Art; Coins and Medals; Early European Art; Modern and Contemporary Art; and Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. First-hand encounters with Yale’s collections are an integral part of teaching and learning across the University and forge creative connections that inspire tomorrow’s leaders. To a degree greater than any other university art museum, the Gallery also serves as a civic center: it is the largest art museum in the region, and serves the city, county, and state. The next Director of the Gallery will be a persuasive and inventive leader who is inspired by the unique mission of a university art museum and who can inspire others as well. S/he should possess the intellectual vigor and vision, as well as the sterling reputation and personal magnetism, that are necessary to galvanize support for the Gallery. The successful candidate will be a strategic and energetic individual who is collaborative, diplomatic, and visionary. Top candidates will demonstrate evidence of progressively increasing organizational leadership within complex environments where relationship building and influencing skills are key to success. Yale seeks candidates with senior-level management experience in an art museum setting, arts institution, or similar organizations, with a record of strong institutional and financial management. Other key qualities include a talent and enthusiasm for outreach and fundraising, and a commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive staff and student body. An advanced degree in an art-related field required; a Ph.D. or MFA is expected, as is equivalent professional and leadership experience in a comparable setting. After a period of unparalleled transformation and significant expansion under long-time Heinz Director Jock Reynolds, the next Director of the Gallery will be in an exceptional position with a formidable platform to be able to shape the future of academic art museums, to grow the next generation of museum professionals as well as future patrons, and to demonstrate the possibilities of art museums in the 21st century overall.
