Director of Diversity & Inclusion

The Phillips Collection is searching for a Director of Diversity and Inclusion (DDI), to join our team. This person will serve on the Director’s Council, the most senior group of interdepartmental staff responsible for shaping the institution’s priorities, external positioning, communication strategies, and audience-engagement.

Internally, the DDI will be responsible for: advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives with the “Cultural Competency, Diversity and Inclusion” task force, including staff and trustee training; guiding curatorial and public program decisions; refining and managing the Diversity Fellowship program, including curriculum development, staff training, recruitment efforts, mentorship, and evaluation; developing and implementing strategies to recruit and train diverse candidates for internships, fellowships, post-doctoral fellowships, and staff; and overseeing the museum’s transition to a paid internship model.

Externally, the DDI will be responsible for: building relationships with key stakeholders in the field, especially at the museum’s institutional partners: the University of Maryland at College Park (UMD) in Prince George’s county, MD and at the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) in DC’s Ward 8 to serve as a top-level community liaison and connector; providing a vision and strategy for a robust community engagement plan.

The perfect candidate will have the following:

  • Degree with a minimum of 8–10 years of relevant work experience. Certification, preferred.
  • Proven track record of successfully recruiting candidates and retaining staff of color, and from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent relationship management skills which results in proven ability to quickly earn the trust of key stakeholders, mobilize and motivate teams; set direction and approach, resolve conflict, deliver tough messages with grace, execute with limited information and ambiguity.
  • Expert change leadership and change management skills.
  • Expert risk management skills.
  • Experience with museum-community partnerships and engagement.
