Associate Curator of Native American Art

The Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth, Hanover, New Hampshire, seeks an associate curator of Native American art to research, document, exhibit, and teach with the museum’s Native American collection and to participate in the collection’s preservation and growth. The associate curator participates as part of a cohort of professionals, including a Native American art fellow and an undergraduate intern, in support of teaching and learning with Native American art at the museum and Dartmouth.

Responsibilities include collaborating with museum and campus colleagues to organize collection installations and one major exhibition; researching and writing printed materials including wall texts, brochures, catalogue, and web site content; teaching and developing teaching methods in the galleries and object-study center for Dartmouth students; and working with Hood colleagues to develop and implement a wide range of interpretive programs.

The associate curator also updates documents and web pages; conducts campus and public tours, lectures, and gallery talks; plans and coordinates visits of tribal cultural heritage representatives, elders, scholars, and curators, catalogues objects for the museum’s database, and answers or directs inquiries and requests for information on collections.

Qualified candidates will understand curatorial practices and methodology, write effectively, have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and operate in a team-based working environment. Museum experience building and working with collections, demonstrated record of scholarship and discernment in acquisitions, exhibitions, and/or publications, and a degree in Art History, Anthropology, or related field with an emphasis on Native American art and culture; masters or Ph.D. preferred.

The associate curator of Native American art is a term position, anticipated to extend through at least September 2020, and is made possible, in part, through the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
