Director, School & Teacher Programs

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, School and Family Programs the Director oversees the following Education Department programs for schools and teachers — After School at the Museum, Ancient World Mobile, Art + Film Institute, Evenings for Educators, High School Internship Program, LACMA On-site School program, Maya Mobile — and supervision of staff who work on those programs. The director will be responsible for re-envisioning these programs as LACMA continues its role as a national leader in its engagement of school communities. The Director will provide leadership with school and teacher audiences, reaffirming LACMA’s role as an innovative and responsive resource for these constituencies.

Some duties include: create and implement innovative programs for schools and teachers that are developed in partnership with school leaders and based on priorities identified by both the museum and school districts served; supervise staff coordinating and implementing programs listed above, providing advice and resolving situations that develop related to these programs; oversee the Education Department’s ongoing training and coaching of all staff and develop a pool of high-quality teaching artists to implement school and teacher programs; develop age-appropriate curriculum materials for school programs and relevant resources for teacher professional development, including materials for several Evenings for Educators programs per year; review program content and written materials developed by staff working on school and teacher programs and provide critical feedback; monitor the Education Department process for evaluating programs on an ongoing basis; improve the promotion of school and teacher programs, and work with the web and digital media team to reorganize and prioritize relevant sections of the website; work with staff to keep statistical information on programs and document compelling evidence to demonstrate impact; work with the Development Team in writing reports and providing data for grant purposes; propose new offerings, both digital and face-to-face, that reflect current priorities within schools and the museum; monitor budgets and keep detailed records of budgets for each program area.

The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Art History, History, or related field, though a Master’s Degree in Museum Education, Museum Studies, or Art History is preferred; minimum 5 - 8 years in a related position with increasing responsibility, including management of strategic planning, budget, and supervision of staff; familiarity with current trends, issues, and best practices in the field of museum education, including experience with curriculum writing, design and implementation; familiarity with the California State Content Standards and knowledgeable of the latest educational reform efforts within public schools; lead and conceive quality standards-aligned professional development opportunities for teachers; excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to represent LACMA and its mission to external stakeholders and partners with professionalism, rigor, and enthusiasm; ability to conduct independent research in areas relevant to LACMA’s collection; strong interpersonal and leadership skills for building effective working relationships at all levels within the Museum, and the ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment; a desire to make LACMA and its onsite and offsite programs responsive to the needs of a diverse range of student and teacher audiences; lead through a deep commitment to diversity, accessibility, equity, and inclusion, both within the Museum and with the school communities that we serve; flexibility, passion, creativity, and adaptability to handle various needs in a dynamic and changing environment.
