Assistant Vice President, School & Family Programs

The Assistant Vice President, School and Family Programs is a newly created, management position reporting to the Vice President, Education and Public Programs. The position is responsible for strategic oversight and management of two key aspects of the Education Department, including programs for youth,families, schools and, teachers. The position works within the regional and national educational and creative spheres to expand the Museum’s outreach by building relationships and forging productive partnerships, in order to promote the Museum and arts education generally, as well as to foster a more diverse and inclusive community.

Some primary duties include: lead and inspire a diverse team of museum personnel, including two directors, multiple full time staff members and over a hundred teaching artists, in the development and delivery of educational programming that aligns with the Museum’s mission and vision; in collaboration with Vice President, Education and Public Programs and directors, provide oversight for development of new programs and revision of existing programs in relation to contemporary needs in the field; manage departmental budget in accordance with established goals and metrics; coordinate with all departments to determine and manage Education priorities of this budget; develop and implement a strategic plan for an education and public engagement program that reflects the art world’s viewpoints, skill sets and bases of knowledge; work effectively in a cross-departmental environment to develop innovative, efficient, and more integrated ways to bring the Museum and its exhibitions and programs to the attention of the community and supporters; provide management and oversight for departmental program and event coordination, planning, and execution; work collaboratively to ensure cross-departmental production deadlines are achieved; engage in ongoing evaluation and assessment of Education programs, including data collection, analysis, and reporting; collaborate with the Vice President, Education and Public Programs to identify and cultivate funding sources and prepare proposals; supervise, mentor, and conduct annual performance reviews for staff that promote professional growth and set priorities that align with the Museum’s mission.

Additional duties include: promote the Museum’s mission and vision through pursuing and developing innovative and strategic community outreach opportunities, particularly as it relates to LACMA’s partnerships in South Los Angeles and other surrounding neighborhoods; develop and strengthen partnerships with schools, creative organizations, academic institutions, artists, and leaders in the educational, museum, and relevant fields; represent LACMA at programs and events throughout the community and at professional conferences; represent the Museum and its programs at donor cultivation events and related high-visibility outreach events; pursue opportunities to promote the work of the Museum—the accomplishments of staff, educators and teaching artists in the larger community, of which the Museum is a part; actively foster diverse staff and student populations.

The qualified candidate will have a Master’s degree in Museum Education, Museum Studies, Art History or related field, preferred; minimum 10 years of museum experience in a related position, with increasing responsibility including strategic planning, management of budget, and supervision of staff; proven record of leadership by contributing to the field by disseminating best practices and innovation in museum education through published articles and presentations at local and national conferences; expertise in latest research and scholarship in the educational role of museums and the intersection of formal and informal education environments for students and teachers; in-depth knowledge of the role of museums in inter-generational learning for families with different learning needs, and the evolving impact for the future of museums; expertise in current practices of both art education and museum education as related to youth, educator, and family audiences—and using this expertise to move the field forward in a rapidly evolving landscape; proven record of establishing and fostering positive relationships with key stakeholders and community partners; bilingual English/Spanish is strongly preferred.
